Chairman of Darulfatwa-Australia, His Eminence, Shaykh Salim Alwan Al-Husainiyy makes the following announcement in regards to the violence that broke out on Cronulla beach on the 9 th of December 2005.

I start in the name of Allah the merciful.

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds, May Allah raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad, his Al and companions, and protect his nation from that which he fears for it.

An ayah in the Qur’an says what means: O you who believe, obey Allah and reflect upon the deeds you have prepared for the hereafter. Allah the Exalted commands us in this Ayah to be obedient to Him.

Obedience is the abide by what Allah has ordained upon us by fulfilling all the obligations and refraining from all the prohibitions. Hence, we are required to obey Allah at all times and in all places, in our homes or work, in places of worship or outdoors.

A Muslim is not one to curse, nor be vile, nor be seditious. Rather the characteristics of a good Muslim include having exemplary conduct, which is a term that includes being patient to the harm inflicted by others, to refrain from harming others and to do good deeds to people who hurt you as well as to people who are good to you.

So, what has happened in the past days on a Sydney shore should not have come from Muslims or members of the Arabic community. Moreover it is improper for any individual to resort to aggression when one faces insults, like fighting fire with fire. Instead one should resort to displaying good manners and be patient when insulted. However, there is nothing to prevent one from resorting to the national laws and to the right authorities in seeking rights, rather than intensifying the situation by taking things into their own hands.

Indeed if all parties consistently resort to aggression to resolve social tensions and conflicts will not conclude positive result. This is why we urge the community to abandon aggression and adopt a positive, calm and reasonable manner of conduct to address such issues. Indeed the Prophet Muhammad has taught us to give the path its right, and its right is to avoid conflict on it.

Also, some scholars have said: “Do not respond to vile acts with vile acts”.
