The best of wealth is the wealth possessed by a righteous man

Ayah 14 of Surat Al ^Imran means: [Adorned for people is to love what they desire — of women and off-springs, piled sums of gold and silver, fine breeds of horses, camels, sheep, goats and cattle and tilled land. Those are the enjoyments of the worldly life. But, Allah offers the sublime abode of Paradise].

Dear Brothers, wealth is not disreputed in its entirety. The Prophet peace be upon him said: <<The best of wealth is the wealth possessed by a righteous man>>. The upright man acquires his wealth through lawful means and spends it in beneficial means. Indeed, our Prophet and his companions are good examples of how to spend wealth in what is good. Ibn^Abbas, may Allah have mercy on him, said: ‘the Prophet was the most generous of men, and was most generous in Ramadan especially after meeting with Jibril (Angel Jibril would meet with the Prophet every night in Ramadan to teach him the Qur’an). He (peace be upon him) would then be more generous to people(in readiness and haste to do charitable deeds)than the fast wind that brings benefits with it such as rain.

Abu-Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, was a prime example of exerting effort for the sake of Allah. He spent his entire wealth for the sake of Allah. He had a strong desire for the Hereafter, for supporting the religion and the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him, and for aiding the weaker Muslims. The Prophet peace be upon him said: <<No wealth has benefited the mission of Islam as much as the wealth of Abu-Bakr>>. Abu-Bakr wept and said: ‘I and my wealth are for you, O’ Messenger of Allah’.

^Umar, may Allah have mercy on him said: ‘The Prophet peace be upon him, urged us to give money in charity and his request came at a time when I was possessing a significant amount of money. So, I said to myself, today will be the day I outdo Abu-Bakr, if such a day were to occur. So I went to the Messenger of Allah with half my wealth. The Prophet peace be upon him asked: <<What did you leave for your family? >> I replied: ‘I left that which is equal to what I gave’…Abu-Bakr came forth and the Prophet asked him: <<And what did you leave for your family? >>. He replied: ‘Allah and His Messenger’. ^Umar then said: ‘I would never be able to outdo you in anything’.

Therefore, ask yourself my brother in Islam — before you accept money and before you spend it – from where did you receive it and on what will you spend it. The Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, said: <<The slave will not move to the next step on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about four matters: about his life-how did he spend it, about his knowledge – what did he do with it, about his money – from where did he receive it and on what did he spend it, and about his body — in how did he wear it out>>.

Ask yourself, my brother, before you are questioned and judge yourself before you are judged.

May Allah make you and me among the ones who earn their wealth by permissible means and spend it, in ways of goodness and acts of worship. May Allah make us among the ones who invest in their Hereafter by performing good deeds night and day to be saved on the day when neither money nor children would benefit one, except the acts of worship that one has done while holding the correct belief in one’s heart.
