Ayah 187 of Surat  Al-A^raf means: They ask you about the Hour, when will its coming be? Say: its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal it at its time except Him. (Its knowledge) is weighty upon the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth. It will not come to you except suddenly.

Allah the Exalted created the earth as our temporary living place. Earth is merely a passage way to the Hereafter and not a permanent living place. Undeniably, life on earth is constantly interchanging. This is evident in our daily circumstances and in the nature of the land we live on. Since the beginning of human life on earth, people die while others are born every day. This will continue until a time when everyone will die including humans, Jinn and animals. This will be the end of life on earth; when Angel Israfil will blow the horn before his life is taken.

Although we do not know when exactly the world is going to end, the Prophet told us of some of the signs which indicate that the Hour is approaching, drawing nearer. These signs are categorized into minor and major signs. The minor signs are those which start occurring a long time before the Day of Judgment while the major signs are those which will occur closer to the Day of Judgement, and they are bizarre and remarkable.

They are: The spread of the smoke, the emergence of the Imposter, the Earth Beast known in Arabic as Dabbatul-Ard, the rising of the sun from its setting place, the descent of Jesus, son of Mary, Ya’juj and Ma’juj known as Gog and Magog, three earthquakes: an earthquake in the East, an earthquake in the West, and an earthquake in the Arabian Peninsula, and the last of those is a fire which will emerge from Yemen, driving people to their gathering place.

The emerging of Ad-Dajjal is the first of the major signs. He is described as having one normal eye, and the other being like a small ball bulging out, as well as being a great deceiver and liar.

He will travel the world in about one year and a half with a tremendous ease, which is given to him by Allah the Exalted. Of his most abhorrent lies will be his claim to being God. He will do this after he wrongly claims to be a prophet. He is now chained by angels on an Island. The whereabouts of this Island is unknown to human beings. He cannot emerge before his due time.

It has been mentioned that of the extraordinary things he will display- by the will of Allah– is that he will split a person in two halves and restore him together again. He will pass by a dead land and order it to extract its treasures, and it will do so. Moreover these treasures will visually follow Al-Dajjal like a swarm of bees.

The Prophet mentioned in his hadith that as an added test, Ad-Dajal, will bring about two rivers one will seem to be of fire and the other will seem to be of water. The Muslims are urged by Prophet Muhammad to rush themselves into the river that appears to be of fire, because in reality it is of the purest water. Thus, the believers will drink from it and walk out safely. However, the river that seems to be of water will in fact be of fire.

At that time hunger will spread on earth, however the followers of Ad-Dajal will not be affected. However, the Muslims who belied and rejected Ad-Dajal will experience the hunger, but they will be relieved from its pain by praising and glorifying Allah. This will also be their means of nourishment. Therefore this state of hunger will not have any side effects upon them.

As for Ya’jouj and Ma’jouj, they will inflict a lot of calamities on people when they come out to them. Ya’jouj and Ma’jouj are of the human race and have many off-springs, all of which are blasphemers. It is mentioned that they are such a large population that on the Day of Judgment the ratio of Ya’jouj and Ma’jouj compared with the common humans will be a hundred to one (100:1).

The people of Ya’jouj and Ma’jouj have been alive for many thousands of years and are isolated from other humans by the will of Allah. They are seized in a place which has not been yet discovered. Separating them from us is a huge wall of iron, hardened with an added cast of copper built by Dhul-Qarnayn, a very pious Muslim. It’s mentioned that this wall is so magnificent in strength and size that none of the inhabitants behind it could climb over it. But, by the Will of Allah, one day they will successfully open for themselves a passage out through this wall.

Thankfully, as Muslims we have been taught by our Prophet Muhammad not to be impressed by Ad-Dajal and his deviousness. We are also urged by our dear Prophet to remain firm in our belief in Allah the Exalted, which will shield us from the fatal influences of that deceiver.
