Rejoicing in happiness for the birth of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, the Muslim Welfare Trust of Victoria celebrated on the 30 th of April 2005 the blessed birth (Al-Mawlid) by organizing an event which was attended by hundreds of people in Melbourne. The event was held to communally thank Allah for the emergence of the blessed Prophet to this world.

The night was attended by the president of the Muslim Welfare Trust of Victoria Sheikh Moustafa El-Chami, the chairman of Darul-Fatwa the Islamic High Council of Australia Sheikh Salim Alwan Al-Husainiyy, the mayor of Hume City Council Mr. Kevin Sheahen, councilor Muhammad Abbouchi, the president of the Islamic Charity Projects Association Dr. Ghayath Al-Shaleh, the president of Al-Harari Association Sheikh Muhammad Mahdy, the president of the Liverpool Islamic Association Mr. Moustafa Masri and a number of other sheikhs and community leaders.

The celebration was launched by Sydney’s Islamic Chanting Group who traveled to Melbourne specifically for this holy occasion. They began by reciting some verses from the Holy Qur’an and then continued by praising through nashid (Islamic song) the Messenger of God.

This was followed by the speech of the chairman of Darul-Fatwa Sheikh Salim Alwan Al-Husainiyy who spoke to the audience about celebrating the birth of the Prophet, peace be upon him, by stating that it’s amongst the good and favorable innovations.

“The first to initiate this practice,” he added, “was the King of Irbil who was a pious, courageous scholar and just ruler. He was named Al-Mudhaffar (the Triumphant) and he lived in the early seventh century after the migration of Prophet Muhammad. This king amassed for these celebrations a large number of Islamic scholars amongst whom were scholars of Hadith and true sufies. Islamic scholars from the east and the west approved this practice; including Al-Hafidh Ibn Dihyah, Al-Hafidh Al-‘Iraqyy, Al-Hafidh Al-Asqalaniyy, Al-Hafidh As-Sakhawiyy and Al-Hafidh As-Suyutiyy. The list of scholars includes scholars of Al-Azhar such as the former Mufti of Egypt Sheikh Muhammad Bikhit Al-Muti’iyy and others from Lebanon such as the former Mufti of Beirut Sheikh Mustafa Naja. So there is no room for disagreement especially after what the Prophet said in an authentic Had ith narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sa hi h in which the Prophet Mu hammad Peace Be Upon Him said what means: ‘The one who innovates a good innovation in Islam receives its reward and a reward similar to that of all those who practice with it after him without any lessening in their reward’”.

The Mayor for Hume City Council Mr. Kevin Sheahen was very impressed with this celebration, and he said that the occasion marked a very special occasion on the Victorian calendar. He also thanked the Muslim Welfare Trust of Victoria for holding the event.

The president of the Muslim Welfare Trust of Victoria, Sheikh Mustapha El-Chami also thanked everyone for attending and especially the Islamic Chanting Group of Sydney for accepting the invitation and participating in the event. “The night of the birth of the Messenger of Allah is a night in which Allah the All-Mighty brought out Master Muhammad to illuminate the world. It is a great and honored night which is full of blessings and enlightenment. Aminah gave birth to him in this glorious night as an offspring of a legitimate marriage”, he added.

The birth of the Prophet was on a Monday, which coincided with the 12 th of the Arabic lunar month Rabi`ul Awwal in the Year of the Fil.

On the night of his birth, many amazing signs were witnessed, which are only testimonial to his great honor and high status. One of which is the extinguishing of the fire of F aris ( Persia), which was worshipped, and which had not extinguished for a thousand years. Also, the Palace of Kisr a (King of Persia) shook and fourteen of its balconies collapsed.

The celebrations were concluded with a Prayer that was conducted by Sheikh Muhammed Mahdy the president of the Harari Association in which he asked Allah to return this great occasion upon the Muslim community in prosperity and success.
