Friday is the best day of the week and the 1st 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah
All praise is due to Allah and may Allah raise the rank of our Prophet Muhammad and protect his nation from that which he fears for them.
Dear brothers in Islam, today we will briefly talk about the blessed day of Friday and we will be outlining the events coinciding with this blessed day.
Generally, without being specific to a month, the best day of the week throughout the year is Friday.
Muslim men are obligated to respond to the call for the midday prayer on Friday by ceasing their trade and stopping work. It is a time of day where they gather in mosques and stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder, responding to the call of the Friday Prayer.
Furthermore, there is a special time that is exclusive to the day of Friday in which the supplications of the Muslims will be granted. This special time is unspecified and it is mentioned that this unspecified time is between the ^Asr (Mid-afternoon Prayer) and the Maghrib (sunset prayer).
The day of Friday carries many virtues and blessings. It was on a Friday that that Prophet Adam was created, that he was sent down to the earth, and it was a Friday, the day that he died. Friday is also a day when our supplications to Allah are most likely to be answered. It is also on a Friday that the onset of the Last Hour will begin. Allah has made this day the best day of the week. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him has mentioned in many hadiths the various characteristics of this day.
It was narrated from Aws Ibn Aws that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: <<The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam (peace be upon him) was created; on that day he died; on that day the Horn will be blown and on that day the inhabitants of the Skies and earth will die. So send a great deal of Salah upon me, for your Salah will be shown to me. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will our Salah upon you be shown to you when your body has perished?” He said, “Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, peace be upon them.>>
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah raise his rank) reported that the Messenger of Allah said while talking about the merits of Friday: <<There is a time on Friday at which a Muslim supplicates Allah and he will be granted whatever he supplicates for. >> And the Prophet pointed with his hand to indicate that this period of time is very short.
One of the virtues of Friday is the Friday Prayer (Salat Al-Jumu^ah). Its significance is extremely great that there is a whole chapter in the Qur’an that is named Al-Jumu^ah.
Ayah 9 of Surat Al-Jumu^ah means: [O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the Prayer on Friday (Jumu^ah Prayer), proceed to perform the Prayer and praise Allah and leave off your engagement in your trade. That is better for you if you know].
The Prophet also said: <<The five daily obligatory prayers, and Friday Prayer to the next Friday Prayer, and the fasting of Ramadan to the next Ramadan, purify one of the sins committed in between them, so long as major sins are avoided.>> (Muslim)
Unfortunately, many people indulge in sins and personal pleasures during this day however as Muslims we know the true meaning and importance of Friday. Allah has urged us to spend this beautiful day wisely so we may compete with one another to attain good deeds for His sake.
In the end, I advise you to utilize your time in what is beneficial for you, especially during special days like the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam) said: <<No good deeds done on other days are more rewarded for than those done on these days [meaning the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.>>
May Allah keep us guided and on the straight path so that we may never go astray.
