Envy

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad, his Al and Companions, and protect his nation from that which he fears for it.

Thereafter, Allah subhanahu wa ta^ala said in His Book:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءامَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللهَ وَلْتَنظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ وَاتَّقُوا اللهَ إِنَّ اللهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

Ayah 18 of Suratul-Hashr means: [O you who believe, fear Allah and let each soul look to what it has prepared for Tomorrow [i.e., the Hereafter], and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing of whatever you do].

Dear brothers in Islam, in this Ayah, Allah has ordered us with Taqwa (piety) and to judge ourselves by looking to what we have prepared for the Hereafter; if one has done well, then one should thank Allah for this endowment and remain steadfast to the obedience of Allah; however, if one has done poorly, then one should ask Allah for forgiveness and purify his heart, as no assets or children would benefit one in the Hereafter, but only the one with pure heart would profit.

Dear brothers, purifying the heart is done by removing all the disreputable diseases that lead to one’s destruction. One of the diseases of the heart is envy, that is, to hate and feel bitter about the endowment bestowed upon a Muslim, and act in accordance with this feeling.

Beware brothers, if you find that a Muslim has been endowed with something and you felt that you hated that for him, wished that he loses it, and you had the determination in your heart to work on making him lose it, or said something or acted in a way to remove it from him, then know, that you have fallen into a sin.

My dear brothers in Islam, we find these days many people who are affected by this ugly disease.

Someone may see that his brother has received an endowment and so he hates or dislikes that he has it. Then he wishes to take it away from him, so he acts upon this wish by lying, deceiving and other evil acts just to see his brother without this endowment.

Would you like to be treated this way O envious person?

Allah, the Exalted, instructed His Prophet, peace be upon him, in the Holy Qur’an to seek refuge by Allah from the evil of the envious person.

So dear brothers, beware of envy, for out of envy, one of the sons of Adam killed his brother…

Beware of envy, as Allah, the Exalted is the Sustainer, and He has divided the sustenance amongst the slaves.

So you will not eat except that which has been sustained for you by the Will of Allah, and this will not change. So due to their ignorance, some would work very hard in trying to remove an endowment from their fellow brothers in order to increase their sustenance.

If it has not been written for you, you will not receive it. If it has been written for you, then there is no doubt that you will receive it. So do not worry yourself and be satisfied with what Allah has given you of the sustenance. If you do not, you will be destroying yourself.

We ask Allah to protect us.
