^Ashura’

Allah Al-^Aliyy Al-^Adhim revealed in his noble Book explicit words that mean: [And verily we sent Nuh as a messenger to his people. He remained with them for a thousand years less fifty; then the flood engulfed them, for they were wrong-doers. We rescued him and those with him in the ship].

Allah ta^ala also revealed what means: [Then we revealed to Musa, ‘Strike the sea with your staff!’ and at this it parted with each part as big as a huge mountain, then we brought near there, the others; And saved Musa and all those with him and then we drowned the others. Verily, in this, there is a sign but most of them were not believers and your Lord is indeed Powerful and Merciful].

Dear brothers, the anniversary of ^Ashura on the tenth of Al-Muharram is the commemoration of the day when Allah saved our master Nuh and those with him from the great flood and then allowed them to land safely, the anniversary of the day when Allah saved Musa and his Muslim followers from the unjust, sinful and disbelieving Pharaoh.

Brothers in faith, there is much to be found in lessons and exhortations from the lives of the prophets, salawatullahi wasalamuhu ^alayhim. They are the best of creation and its elite. Allah beautified them with the best characters and the finest qualities. He sent our master Nuh, peace be upon him, to a disbelieving nation and he set about calling them to Islam day and night. Sometimes he would remind them of the rewards of the believers in the Hereafter, while at other times he would threaten them with the torture of God if they choose not to believe. This continued for a period of 950 years but most of them did not accept faith. Rather, they remained astray, transgressing and committing hostile acts against him, harming him through mockery and beating him so severely that he would fall unconscious until they think that he had died. But after he becomes conscious again he would not divert him from his purpose to call people to Islam. In reality he would return to calling them to accept faith time after time without relenting and without losing his motivation. However, when Allah revealed to him that no one else in his nation was going to believe other than those who had already accepted faith, Prophet Nuh made a du^a against the disbelieving people which means, “My Lord! Do not leave any of the disbelievers on Earth at all.

Afterwards, Allah punished them by the flood and did not spare any disbeliever. Allah saved His Prophet and those of his nation who believed in him in the ark which Nuh had built by Allah’s order.

As for our master Musa, brothers in faith, he lived at the time of the unjust and tyrant king, Pharaoh. Pharaoh claimed to be God, may Allah ta^ala protect us from such abhorrent blasphemy. Allah ordered our master Musa, ^alayhis-salam, to go to Pharaoh and call him to accept Islam and worship Allah only. Musa went to Pharaoh and showed him astounding miracles which were irrefutable proof that he had been sent by Allah but Pharaoh chose not to believe. Instead, he pursued Prophet Musa and his followers to kill them. Allah ta^ala revealed to Prophet Musa to strike the sea with his staff and at doing so, the sea split open. This uncovered twelve sections, each looking like a large mountain, and between every pair was a dry path. Prophet Musa and the people with him crossed the sea safely before it collapsed on Pharaoh and his soldiers causing every one of them to drown. When death came upon Pharaoh, he expressed his remorse but repenting at such a time did not benefit him as it is a condition of the valid repentance to do so before one is certainly hopeless of surviving death.

In the end I ask Allah to forgive us and end our lives on Islam, Ameen.
