In collaboration on goodness and for added strength in community ties during the great month of Ramadan:

The Islamic Welfare Association of Victoria ran its annual Ramadan dinner for this year (2004) at the Broadmeadows Youth Central whereby a large number of community members attended this event of breaking the fast. The president of the association Sheikh Mustafa Al Shami welcomed the gathering which included the chairman of Darul-Fatwa Australia Sheikh Salim Alwan Al-Husainiyy, Federal MP Clevan Thompson, Mayor for Hume Mohamad Abbouche, the Mayor for Moreland Anthony Helou and many local community leaders and media representatives.

The proceedings of the night began with a blessed recitation of the Holy Qur’an followed by a word for the president in which he encouraged piety and good deeds, and he renewed his support for Darul-Fatwa the Islamic High Council of Australia as the main religious representative for moderate associations in Australia.

The president was then followed by the chairman Sheikh Alwan who described the benefits of the month of Ramadan, the month of forgiveness and high morality. He also explained the importance of Darul-Fatwa which strives to serve the Australian Muslim community and to genuinely represent its members through a representation which includes both Arabic and non-Arabic speaking communities from different Australian states totalling over 20 organisations and Islamic institutions. Darul-Fatwa strives to unite the efforts of sincere community members towards what is good for the nation and its people. Darul-Fatwa rejects all forms of extremism and detested acts of violence.

Federal MP Thompson was next to address the gathering where he praised the Welfare Association of Victoria for its moderate political and religious stance, which battles against extremism and terrorism that claims the name of Islam. Mayor for Hume Mohamad Abbouche then addressed the fasting community members by encouraging the association towards remaining steadfast on the line of moderation and towards continuing its diligent work for unity and stability. The mayor for Moreland then congratulated the association on the occasion of the holy month, and the president for the Harari association Muhammad Mahdi followed with a Du^a’ (supplication to God).

Islamic chants interleaved the addresses allowing for a more pleasant and warmer atmosphere.

The Islamic Welfare Association of Victoria thanks all those that contributed to the success of the night and asks Allah for their wellbeing and blessing.
