The miracle is an extraordinary act. It is not a usual event that happens in everyday life or to everyone. Miracles are only for prophets and are always in agreement with what they say. So, no one can do anything that is equal or similar to a miracle to discredit a prophet. A Prophet is known through a miracle, in fact there has not been a Prophet without a miracle. A miracle is a sign which testifies to the truth of the claim of Prophethood that a prophet makes. Imam ash-Shafi^iyy said:" For every miracle Allah gave to the other Prophets, He gave Prophet Muhammad a similar or a greater miracle".
Among the miracles of Prophet Muhammad is the story about the wolf that spoke and testified that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Al-Imam Ahmad narrated it from the route of Abu Sa^id Al-Khudriyy with a trustworthy chain of narration.
In this narration Abu Sa^id Al-Khudriyy says “Once when a shepherd was grazing his sheep in al-Harrah (a mountain with black stones next to Al-Madinah) a wolf came to eat one of his sheep. The shepherd stood between the wolf and the sheep to prevent the wolf from attacking the sheep. The wolf sat on his tail and spoke to the shepherd. It said “Don’t you fear Allah? You prevent me from the sustenance which Allah has prepared for me.” The shepherd said “What an astonishing matter! A wolf sitting on its tail is speaking with the speech of humans!” The wolf said “Let me tell you about something more astonishing. The Messenger of Allah is between the two Harrahs telling the people about the news of the previous nations.”
“The shepherd took his sheep and went to Al-Madinah and put his things in a place in Al-Madinah and went to the Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, and told him about the story of the wolf. The Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, went out to the people, and said to the shepherd “Stand up and tell them what you saw.” The shepherd told the people about what the wolf said. The Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, said “This shepherd said the truth. Know that among the signs of the Day of Judgment is that the wild animals would speak to the people. By Allah, the One who controls my soul, the Day of Judgment would not occur until the beasts speak to the people, This is one of the miracles of the Prophet. It consists of an animal speaking and testifying that the Prophet is truthful and that he is the Messenger of Allah. It contains also some of the signs of the Day of Judgment. Among these signs is that when the Day of Judgment becomes very close it becomes a usual thing that the animals speak to the people. This is before the Day of Judgment. Which is coming very soon.
Dear brothers in Islam, fear Allah and be prepared for the Day of Judgment, and never waste your time in acts of disobedience to Allah. For indeed the successful one is the one who does not engage in worldly pleasures throughout his life, rather, he enlightens his grave with righteous deeds before he is admitted into it.
