The Honourable Birth, Upbringing, Lineage, Names, Physical Description of Prophet Muhammad

On the 12th of Rabi^ ul-‘Awwal of every year an honoured and glorified memory shines over the whole world, and is commemorated by the entire Muslim world. Every honest Muslim participates in celebrating such an honourable memory to praise Allah for the blessing and endowment of Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him.

This occasion is the Honourable Birth of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. How can one not celebrate a birth that has changed the face of history. This birth was one of the best gifts that one can ever receive. It is because of this Prophet may Allah raise his rank that we became Muslims. What is better than becoming a Muslim, remaining steadfast to Islam and dieing as a Muslim. We thank Allah for this birth and for making us among the followers of this great Prophet.

Only those who have darkness in their hearts deny the permissibility of celebrating such a birth, and forbid others from doing so. It is absolutely not unlawful (haram) to celebrate the birth of the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, rather it is a rewardable deed. In fact it is the habit of hundreds of millions of Muslims all over Asia, Africa, Europe, India, Bangladesh, Fiji, Indonesia, Yemen, Turkey, Pakistan, and America. Only those who do not love the Prophet say that such celebrations are unlawful (haram).

What Proofs the Scholars gave for the Validity of the Mawlid.

The Prophet recognized Monday and praised fasting it, because he was born and received revelation on that day. He said:

ذاك يومُ أُنْزِلَ علىَّ ويومٌ ولِدتُ فيه

i.e., this is the day I was born. (Muslim)

Prophet Muhammad fasted the 10th of Muharram after he emigrated to Madinah. He found that the Jews commemorate every year the day Allah saved Prophet Moosa and his followers from Pharaoh. It was revealed to the Prophet what the Jews said was true, so the Prophet told them, as alBukhariyy narrated:

نحنُ أَوْلى بموسى

That is, "We are more deserving of Moosa than you" and the Prophet ordered the Muslims to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram as optional days.

Did the Prophet celebrate the Mawlid. The Mawlid did not occur during the time of the Prophet, peace on him, but the Prophet did not say that the Mawlid is unlawful. According to the laws of Islam, it is something innovated. Moreover, the Mawlid is a good innovation.

What is an Innovation. An innovation is something new that did not occur previous to the advent of the innovation.

The Beautiful Names of Prophet Muhammad

Peace be upon him

Allah the Exalted has made the name of His Messenger clear in the Holy Qur’an. In Surah al-Fath, verse 129 Allah said:

{مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللهِ}

Which means: “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”

Also, Allah mentioned in the Qur’an that Prophet ^Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, informed his people about the emergence of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. In Surah as-Saff, verse 6 Allah said:

{وَمُبَشِّرًا بِرَسُولٍ يَأْتِي مِن بَعْدِي اسْمُهُ أَحْمَدُ}

Which means: “And bringing the good news about a Messenger who will come after me whose name shall be Ahmad.”

Muhammad, the one with the aggrandized manners

He, may Allah raise his rank, was attributed with good traits such as truthfulness, honesty, keeping ties with his kin, chastity, generosity, bravery, and obeying Allah in all instances; moments; and with every breath. This was along with splendid eloquence, complete advice, compassion and mercy, benevolence, and treating the poor; the orphans; the widows; and the weak ones kindly. He was may Allah raise his rank, the most humble human ever to exist; he used to love the needy; attend their funerals; and visit the sick. This was besides being handsome looking with a beautiful image, and of a great lineage. Allah ta^ala said:

{اللهُ أَعْلَمُ حَيْثُ يَجْعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُ}

إني عشقت محمدًا قرشيًا حُبًّا يفوق محبتي أبَويَّا
ماذا أُحَدِّثُ عن جمال محمّد أرني كمثل الهاشمي ذكيَّا

Muhammad is the one whom the hearts long for, and whom the eyes are delighted by glancing at his beauty, and whom the hearts are comforted by.
His words are enlightenment (guidance), he brings enlightenment with him and spreads it as he leaves; and his actions are enlightenment. His silence increases his aura. And when he speaks, the hearts and sights are totally overwhelmed.
